MBE Percentiles, February 2018

The Illinois Board of Bar Examiners has released the results for the February 2018 bar exam and as usual with the specific state results, national MBE percentiles have been released.

There are 175 potential raw points on the exam and the highest scaled score that one can achieve is a 200.  On this exam, a scaled score of 135 would place you in the 60th percentile of all test takers.  Just 5 more scaled points (140) would jump you up to the 71st percentile.  At the very high end, a 165 scaled score on this exam would place you in the 98th percentile of all test takers.

If you're preparing for the MBE, that 140 scaled score is an excellent goal.

The table is below:

  1. Aren't these percentiles ridiculously low, even for February? My state requires a 136 to pass which means more than 60 percent of test takers failed the MBE. How is this even possible? :/

  2. Just to use 135 as an example, what this tells us is that if you scored a 135, 60% of the people who took the test scored less than you. So it doesn’t mean that 60% failed with a 135; it means that If you get that scaled score you’ve scored better than 60% of the total # of test takers.

  3. Thank you. But in a state that requires a 136, you would have to be above the 60th percentile to pass, correct? That's what concerns me. I only took the MBE.

    I appreciate your assistance.

  4. I guess the best way to think about it is like this: In a state (like Florida) that requires a 136, that state is saying that for you to pass on this particular exam (because it varies slightly each exam), it’s necessary that you score better than at least 60% of the people who took the test. Or, another way to look at it—it’s necessary you score somewhere in the top 40% of test takers.
